In the early 1980s, Detroit’s Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson) fused futuristic synths, funk, and European electronic influences to create a sound that would define generations. Techno was a sonic escape from industrial decline, a futuristic manifesto for the disenfranchised.
By the late ‘80s, techno crossed the Atlantic, igniting Europe’s underground. Berlin’s fall of the Wall in 1989 turned abandoned spaces into techno temples, like Tresor and Berghain, where the genre morphed into something darker, faster, and hypnotic. Today, techno is a global language, spoken in sweaty clubs, open-air festivals, and intimate warehouses. At ADE 2025, it’s the heartbeat of Amsterdam.
