KMRU is the alias of Joseph Kamaru, a Kenyan sound artist and experimental musician raised in Nairobi and currently based in Berlin. Drawing on field recordings, drones, noise, improvisation, and machine learning, KMRU crafts textural, immersive sonic worlds that blur the line between documentary and abstraction. His work is deeply rooted in place and memory, often weaving together environmental sounds with electronic composition. Widely recognised as a pivotal voice in contemporary experimental music, he has been praised by Pitchfork, NPR, Resident Advisor, and Bandcamp, and received an honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2023. He holds an MA in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts from the Universität der Künste Berlin.
